Maar nog altijd komen overal in het land honderden vrouwen maandelijks bijeen op de avonden van hun vereniging. Wat doen zij daar? Tekenaar Babette Wagenvoort en schrijver Lokien de Bie bezochten tien verenigingsavonden in het Westland, een streek die ook representatief genoemd kan worden voor de vrouwenverenigingscultuur elders in het land. Hun leerzame, vaak ook vermakelijke reportage - in tekeningen, tekst en interviews - brengt een ode aan een verdwijnend Nederlands cultureel fenomeen.

Fotograaf Kees Martens woont naar volle tevredenheid al meer dan 30 jaar in Woensel West. Hij heeft de wijk in het noordwesten van Eindhoven zien veranderen van achterbuurt naar ‘krachtwijk’ en heeft die ontwikkeling vastgelegd. De wijk Woensel West werd in de jaren ’30 tot ’50 van de vorige eeuw gebouwd om te voorzien in de groeiende vraag naar arbeiderswoningen voor medewerkers van Philips. In de jaren ‘80 en ‘90 kreeg de wijk een slechte naam door criminaliteit en prostitutie. Daarna is met landelijke steun, inzet van de gemeente Eindhoven en vooral van woningbouw-corporatie Trudo begonnen met herstel. Kees Martens fotografeerde de sloop, renovatie en nieuwbouw van woningen. Hij zocht contact met de bewoners, autochtonen en allochtonen en fotografeerde hen in hun woonkamer. Onderdeel van het project was dat Martens wilde onderzoeken wat de ‘oorspronkelijke’ bewoners vonden van de veranderingen in hun wijk. Voelden zij zich er nog wel thuis? Ook documenteerde hij activiteiten die met en voor de bewoners werden georganiseerd om saamhorigheid te bevorderen.

Pubers kampen met een lastig imago. Als er iets over hen wordt gezegd of geschreven, gaat het voornamelijk over de problematiek. 'Ik puber.' laat zien dat de wereld van de puber veel rijker geschakeerd is. In Ik puber. zijn pubers zelf aan het woord. Bovendien worden ze zonder te oordelen in alle soorten en maten in beeld gebracht. Wat opvalt is hoe veerkrachtig de meesten in het leven staan, vaak ongeacht de situatie waarin zij verkeren. Dat beeld beklijft. Fotografe Ellen Martens legt met haar camera het moment vast waarop de puber zijn waakzaamheid even laat varen en ons een blik naar binnen gunt. In de interviews krijgen zij de ruimte hun verhaal te vertellen. Beeld en tekst geven een beeld van pubers anno nu, van hun familie, vrienden, liefdesleven, financiën, muziek, uiterlijk, status, verdriet, idealen, toekomst, enzovoort.
